A literal take on magic
One of the coolest things about my university course was getting to work with Dneg for a project, they gave us multiple options on projects and I went with “create a magical effect” using the two animations provided. I may have taken things a bit literally in that respect as my project was based on real-life magicians rather than fantasy.

other then a new level of satire
This project was actually super fun to work on as I learned a lot about using forces to influence RBD objects, RBD emitters, and a little bit of cloth simulation. I even got to steal an arm from the SFX department and drop it a few times to get a reference for how dismembered arms would bounce. overall I’m happy with how it came out, if I was to do it again I would take more care in my render settings as it has a couple of bugs, but that’s something I learned from this as well.

Below are some test flipbooks to see how the simulation would work together, these were works in progress so they differ from the end result but they helped me nail down exactly how I wanted my final render to look. I figured the particle dissolves on the pig was probably a bit too close to fantasy for my literal take on magic so, in the end, it was replaced with a confetti sim so rather than dissolving the guy instead explodes into confetti.
